Rebuilding America Is About More Than The Physical

After the COVID relief package that Biden and the Democrats got through Congress, the president is now ready to tackle infrastructure.

And that is infrastructure in its broadest meaning which includes improving our “human capital.” It is about time that we, as a nation, do exactly that. We are falling apart both literally and figuratively. My generation, the boomers, has allowed a self-indulgent ethos to blossom and infect our children and grandchildren. America is far from the “Greatest Generation” of our parents’ self-sacrifice.

This bankrupt credo has allowed us to live in a past that has no relation to the present world situation. Americans are living in their deteriorating mansions waiting for their close-up much as Norma Desmond was. Only we are not aging movie stars but delusional citizens of a nation that either wants to make itself great again or believes we are still top dog without peers. Neither is true.

That is why everything in the infrastructure package is vital. We are fast approaching a point of no return in everything from climate to the simple act of getting from here to there reliably.

Biden sees the term infrastructure very broadly which includes helping Americans become more productive workers and citizens. There is nothing wrong with that. And he has proposed a way to pay for it through an increase in corporate taxes.
