Trump, the Press & Us…Nothing Has Changed

During the campaign, Donald Trump told the American people over and over that he would end the Russian-Ukraine War on Day 1. He would lower the cost of groceries quickly and would have us produce more oil even though we are already the world’s number one producer. And the biggest promise of all, round up and deport 12 million people.

I guess those goals are hard and will require extensive if not impossible feats of political cohesion and compromise. Instead remember James Carville’s political maxim and tactic “look at the birdie over here.” That tactic is used to distract people from concentrating on the things that they thought were going to happen. That is what comes to mind watching Trump’s press conference.

At the Trump press conference, he dazzled us with his possible invasion of Panama and Greenland to make them part of the U.S., wanting to annex Canada as the 51st state, and renaming the Gulf of Mexico among other things such as the uselessness of windmills and their effect on whales. Does anyone remember any of these pressing problems from his election promises?

What I remember is Trump harping on bringing down the cost of food and other products. Last week, he began backtracking on those promises because they were difficult if not impossible for him to achieve. It has been a political saying forever that when a pol can’t deliver, the war drums begin to beat.

I heard the drums, but I didn’t hear even a peep about the prices he promised to reverse. And the price of eggs, a major benchmark during the Biden years, are now at their highest cost in memory….and for primarily the same reason which is bird flu’s impact on the chicken flocks.

And the media covered this as if Donald was serious instead of portraying him as a character in a Moliere farce. The chaos is back and all the important things that this past election was about are soon forgotten. This is the genius of Donald Trump.

As he distracts us with nothing, his family is busy making deals that make Hunter Biden look like an amateur. Son-in-law Kushner learned from his first experience to stay out of government but stay close to “Dad.” He just ended up with an additional $1.5 billion from his Arab friends to go into his investment fund. Don Jr., an advance scout for his dad, is in Greenland sorting out the best places for MAGA and maybe the Trump Organization to expand. And of course, Eric is meeting with a Trump associate from the Gulf States to plot out billion dollar deals in the U.S.

It is important that we give Donald Trump an opportunity to do what he said regarding bringing down the deficit, retail prices, immigration, and taxes. We should not however be distracted by the hype of invading our allies, Panama and Denmark and bullying Canada that has been our military partner in two World Wars, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

The media and especially the American people need not look at “the bird over there” but rather the promises Trump made and was elected to fulfill. If he accomplishes anything less that outcome is unacceptable.
