Why Haley Should Stay In The Race

Trump will be the Republican nominee for president. It will happen unless he is locked up.

That is why Nikki Haley should stay in the race. She had 40% of the vote in her home state of South Carolina. Trump did not crush her no matter what the pundits say. It is a shame that Haley took so long to become a real candidate instead of wearing kid gloves for the past year.

Can she beat Trump to the nomination? The answer is no. But if he were to become indisposed, she should be the one who gets the second look. The incredible shrinking Ron DeSantis deserves to remain governor, as do all the rest of the kowtowing men who were at best job interviewing for the vice presidency…Ramaswamy and Scott come to mind.

If I were Nikki, I would stay in the race just to prove what a real American family looks like. She has a husband serving his country on active duty in the Armed Forces…something no Trump has ever done. She also has a daughter who was recently married and a son still in school. You can really envision them sitting around the proverbial kitchen table.

Donald’s grandfather came to the U.S. in 1885 after dodging service in the German Army. Father Fred was 36 when the U.S. entered World War II. He was at the cusp of being too old though he had to register for the draft. Men up to the age of 45, depending on their classification, served. Though I didn’t find anything official, Fred Trump was building housing for war workers during this period and probably had some type of deferment as essential to the wartime economy.

Donald Trump’s proclivity for bone spurs was what kept him at home during Vietnam. We also know that Trump famously has said that men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for this country are suckers. A man he despised, Senator John McCain, who was in perpetual pain due to his war injuries forbade Trump from attending his funeral.

When Trump thanked his family after winning the nomination, he had to refer to a cheat sheet naming them including his wife. Haley’s husband is thousands of miles away on an island for a year with the South Carolina National Guard, Melania is where…anywhere but by her husband’s side. And she is obviously absent for his many court dates also.

Probably Nikki Haley will not be the nominee. That is too bad because not only does she have coherent policies, as the nominee polls suggest that she would beat Biden in the general election. But as we have seen under the Trump regime, Republicans do not care about winning any more. Their goal is to narrow their base so that only the Trumpiest of Trumpets can be called Republicans.

It is true for even those Republicans that are “Never Trumpers” or say they wouldn’t vote for him if he were convicted of a crime, most will swallow hard and vote for him. However, the same goes for those Democrats who say they won’t vote for Biden. The small number of Independents that are not Democrat or Republican leaning will end up pulling the lever for Biden once again. Those are the very voters who would give Nikki Haley a try over the old men that will be the nominees of their parties and one of whom will be the next president.
